LGL Representatives Presented the “Change It!” Petition Signatures to the Lithuanian President

At 1:00 pm on the 15th of May, 2015, the national LGBT* rights organization LGL’s Board Chair, Elena Dapkūnaitė, and Executive Director, Vladimir Simonko, presented the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė with the “Change It!” petition signatures.

LGL leadership presented a representative of the presidential office with the signatures collected in support of the “Change It!” social campaign. These signatures represent Lithuanian popular support for more consistent, meaningful and inclusive responses to the needs of LGBT* people on behalf of state institutions. We hope that the President’s position on this critically important issue will catalyze a broader discussion about LGBT* rights and issues in Lithuanian society.

From 2014 to 2015, LGL launched the “Change It!” social campaign, which invited Lithuanian citizens to sign a petition encouraging decision-makers, policy-makers and policy-implementers to take concrete measures to ensure the legal and social equality of LGBT* people in Lithuania. The petition calls for the creation of safe and inclusive educational environments, efforts to combat discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity, the protection of LGBT* people against hate crimes and hate-motivated incidents, and the effective protection of transgender human rights in Lithuania.
