A new study has revealed the benefits of letting transgender kids be themselves.
Mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are far higher among trans people than cisgendered, especially among children.
But now a study has explained in science why letting trans kids just be themselves is better for them.
The new study, published in the journal American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, says that support is crucial during the challenging years.
Experts worked with 63 trans children between 2012 and 2015, all from supportive families and who were already transitioned socially.
The kids involved in the study were referred to by the correct pronouns and wearing the clothing they wished to wear for their gender identity.
And what the study found was remarkable.
The trans children from supportive backgrounds and with supportive peers were no more likely to have depression than their cisgendered peers.
They were marginally more likely to suffer from anxiety.
However few places have tolerant attitudes towards transgender youth.
31 US states have few or no laws protecting people based on gender identity, according to the Transgender Law Centre.
