The Deputy Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament supports homophobic amendments and tells homosexuals to stay in the closet
On January 20, Virginija Baltraitienė, Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, participated in the “Daily Question’ programme on Ziniu radijas (News Radio) and commented on the recent resolution adopted by the European Parliament regarding discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation in Lithuania.
The politician did not agree with the concern expressed by the members of the European Parliament that the sanctions imposed ‘for public propagation of homosexual relations’ violate human rights:
<…> ‘It should be the personal business of each member of the Seimas how they vote and what opinion they exercise, and to vote accordingly. I believe that we are a state with its old underlying traditions, I will also vote in favour that this [homosexuality – editor’s note] will not be propagated and imposed by force. This should not be explained to children at a young age, but when they grow up they must be aware that there are different people, I am definitely against permission for them to adopt children’   <…>.
According to the Deputy Speaker of the Seimas, by-laws must clearly define the meaning of propagation.
‘Opposition should not be directed against these people [homosexuals – editor’s note], but they should not publicly propagate their cause [homosexuality – editor’s note], or be brutal in their interference. The European Parliament and the European Union are seen to be interested in this too, this is what mostly outraged people not that such people [homosexuals – editor’s note] lived here,’ the politician commented.
