The Speaker of the Lithuanian Parliament Seimas and the leader of the Lithuanian Labor Party Loreta Graužinienė declared that Latvia’s foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics should have disclosed his sexual orientation prior to the assignment to the post.
“But I think that the Minister should have done it prior to the appointment to the post rather than afterwards,” – told the Speaker of the Seimas Lithuanian “News Radio” on Wednesday, November 12, 2014. She argued that “if a person goes into politics, he has to be frank.”
“People who elect him must know about the politician nominated to a high political position. I cannot determine how much they need to know about his private life. Here the politician himself is the most likely person to decide on how much he wants to publicize anything related to his personal life, “- insisted L. Graužinienė.
However, Lithuania’s Speaker of the Seimas had no opinion about Latvia’s foreign minister Edgars Rinkevics’ personal decision to come out as gay: “There is nothing to rejoice or cry about here, if a person chose to announce it.”
Latvia’s foreign minister E. Rinkevics revealed he was gay on “Twitter” last Thursday accompanied by the ‘hashtag, Proudtobegay’. The posting was shared over 1,000 times and led to an outpouring of support worldwide.
