Trans couple make history after giving birth to baby

A South American couple, both of whom are trans, have made history by giving birth to their first child.

This is the first baby to born to transgender parents in South America.

Fernando Machado and Diane Rodriguez grew up in Ecuador, and met online, they told the BBC.

‘We are the same as other families. Even though we might not have the same rights, we are the same,’ they said.

‘We live as man and woman. I’m a transfeminine woman and Fernando is a transmasculine man. The process to get here was complex for each of us,’ Machado said told reporters.

The sex of the baby has not been released, or its name: Although the parents have affectionately dubbed them ‘The Snail.’

‘Being a mother was never something I thought I would do because I am a transsexual,’ Rodriguez said.

Both of the parents are trans activists in Ecuador, and have made a point about being public about getting pregnant and raising a child.

Because of her outspokenness, Rodriguez says she has been abducted several times. They say there is still a way to go before Ecuador is accepting of different kinds of families.
