Austria: MEP Ulrike Lunacek attacked with acid at Vienna’s Rainbow Parade

Openly lesbian Greens MEP and co-president of the European Parliament’s Intergroup on LGBT Rights Ulrike Lunacek was attacked at Vienna’s Rainbow Parade on Friday, marring an event in which 150,000 marched for LGBTI equality. Police are still searching for the perpetrator who threw butyric acid on Lunacek.

Never before has there been an attack at the Rainbow Parade,’ Lunacek said, according to The Local, adding that the attack showed that the fight for LGBTI acceptance was not over in Austria. Around 50 Christian protesters were holding a counter-demonstration in the city on the same day but it is unknown if the attacker had anything to do with that event which was itself counter-protested by around 200 LGBTI rights supporters.
