Queering the History of the Soviet Union: Uladzimir Valodzin Visited LGBT* Centre

On Wednesday, March 8, 2017, Belarusian historician Uladzimir Valodzin visited Vilnius and held the lecture about queer history in Belarus in LGBT* centre in LGL`s office.

Uladzimir presented to a numerous audience his historical research on queer history of Belarus – stories and fates of the people who could we call today as queers. Although Uladzimir is a nineteenth and twentieth century historician, he touched briefly also the older times since there are interesting historical sources that he showed in his presentation. Then he focused on modern history, not forgetting to point out that most of the information historicians have are about noble people, since there is not that many historical sources about „ordinary people“. His research about the most recent times was based on archive materials, media articles, memoirs and oral history sources. As a result of his research there was a publication „Queer History of Belarus in the second half of the 20th century: a preliminary study“ issued in 2016. The publication was presented to the audience and ones who were interested could get the free copy in Russian or English.

The publication „Queer History of Belarus in the second half of the 20th century: a preliminary study“ is available also online.
