LGL Celebrates the Start of the School Year

National LGBT* rights organization LGL wishes students a successful start to their school year!

This summer, LGL carried out a survey in which 541 LGBT* high school students between the ages of 14 and 18 participated, sharing their experiences in school over the 2016-17 school year, and preliminary results suggest that homophobic and transphobic bullying remain clear problems in Lithuanian schools.

According to preliminary data collected in LGL’s survey, 82% of the LGBT* students surveyed indicated that they had faced bullying due to their sexual orientation and/or gender identity at school in the last year. Of these respondents, 50% reported that their teachers did not at any point react to homophobic bullying.

A special report will be published presenting LGL’s survey results in detail, while the broader results of the project “Developing research capacity in Eastern Europe” will be posted on the project page on LGL’s website.

National LGBT* rights organization LGL will continue its work in the educational sphere so that schools will not continue to welcome homophobic and transphobic bullying.
